Posted August 29, 2006. D-4D actually stands for direct Injection 4 Cylinder Common Rail Diesel Engine. Common rail diesels inject a fine mist of fuel into the engine at very high pressure. The result is the same power and refinement as a petrol engine, but with better fuel efficiency and lower emissions. As a result, although the engine runs on regular gasoline, it has a compression ratio of 10:1, for torque improvement in the low- to mid-rpm range of 10% over conventional engines. In addition, since direct fuel injection provides a rapid fuel supply, the D-4 provides better accelerator responsiveness.

On some early direct injected engines it was possible to block off the EGR system, however on later models (and I suspect your Avensis falls into this category), engine management systems try to compensate for mixture and emission readings which are outside of normal parameters and you end up with poor running, excessive fuel consumption and high emissions.

a D4D diesel engine in a TOYOTA HILUX well all filters good (air and fuel) all diesel fuel lines purged of air and at spec pressure good fuel pumps. glow plugs not dead,(all) get the service manual and it covers injector changes steps. fuse good? to pumps. (lift pumps etc) many pumps can not pump air so must be primed. Shortcomings in performance are made up for by reduced running costs as the smaller engine is cleaner and more efficient, returning a claimed 62.8mpg and emitting 119g/km of CO2. The old 2.0-litre
Toyota 3RZ Engine — The Introduction. The 3RZ-FE or 3RZ engine superseded the company’s 22R-E engine in 1994. With a displacement of 2.7 liters, this engine was quite sizable when you consider its inline-four cylinder configuration. The higher displacement was a must because the vehicles this motor would fit were mostly utilitarian in nature.
The three and five-door Land Cruiser both adopt the new 2.8-litre D-4D unit, which replaces the current 3.0-litre engine. The focus is on improved driveability with better torque delivery, plus lower fuel consumption and reduced CO 2 emissions. The 2,755cc, 16-valve DOHC engine produces a maximum 174bhp (130kW).
The D-4D/ CRDI engine is better in fuel efficiency and pick up. One feature of the electronic controls associated with the common rail (D-4D) is that there is no need to wait for glow plugs to warm up before starting the engine like in the way it is in the turbo direct injection car engines. You just turn the key and it fires up immediately.
198–441 N⋅m (146–325 lb⋅ft) The Mitsubishi 4M4 engine is a range of four-cylinder diesel piston engines from Mitsubishi Motors, first introduced in the second generation of their Montero/Pajero/Shogun SUVs. They superseded the previous 4D5 engine family, main differences are enlarged displacements and the utilization of one or two over
