It was a biproduct of the original line of hidden blades or something. Pretty sure the later versions were adjusted to stop cutting off fingers in a fight on accident but they still would amputate the finger as a symbol. Leonardo da Vinci fixed them and they just mark the finger with hot pliers as a symbol.
Leonardo DiVinci repairs your hidden blade, just as you get it. I can open the map, options dialog, and change weapons but the cut-scene will not proceed. The end of the game showed that other hidden ones cut their finger to honor Bayek, to show respect/trust. In AC1, the hidden blade design was changes to require a finger cut..I feel like they did this for the recruits to show trust/confidence in the brotherhood. I do not see a retcon here, the design just changed from Bayek's time to Altair's time.
